Week 19 of the APBL delivered statement wins, razor-thin finishes, and major playoff implications as the season winds down.
Rangers Deliver Payback Against Reds
The Texas Rangers (382–244) not only posted the largest margin of victory of the week (+138), but they did it against one of the league’s heavyweights — the Cincinnati Reds. After a narrow 5-point loss back in Week 3, the Rangers circled this rematch on the calendar, and they didn’t disappoint. The emphatic win signals that the Rangers are peaking at the right time.
Braves, Yankees Both Stumble
Two other powerhouses fell in Week 19. The St. Louis Cardinals (233–221) edged out the Atlanta Braves in a tight contest, while the Los Angeles Angels (346–312) toppled the mighty New York Yankees by 34 points. With the Yankees falling, the Detroit Tigers (285–263) took advantage, defeating the Cubs and pulling even with New York in the standings. The Yankees still hold the tiebreaker thanks to two head-to-head wins over Detroit, but the Tigers have made the AL playoff race very interesting.
Nail-Biters and Statement Wins
The Boston Red Sox (270–268) survived the week’s closest game, slipping past the Orioles by just two points in a thriller. The San Francisco Giants (242–118) kept their playoff hopes alive with a dominant showing against the Guardians, reminding the league that last year’s champions won’t go quietly. Meanwhile, the Toronto Blue Jays (213–140) took care of business against the White Sox, staying alive in the playoff hunt.
Playoff Picture
- National League: Every team remains mathematically alive with three weeks to go, ensuring a dramatic finish down the stretch.
- American League: The Guardians and White Sox have officially been eliminated, but every other team remains in the hunt. The Blue Jays hold a crucial tiebreaker over the Orioles, meaning a Toronto win paired with an Orioles loss could flip the final playoff spot. Fittingly, those two teams meet in the final week of the season — a game that could decide everything.
Week 20 Preview
- Reds vs White Sox: A sibling rivalry rematch with bragging rights on the line.
- Braves vs Rangers: Game of the Week — two of the league’s best square off with major seeding implications.
- Orioles vs Cardinals: St. Louis holds a 2-1 all-time edge and won the earlier matchup this season by 80.
- Cubs vs Angels: Cubs lead the all-time series 2-1, including a 33-point win earlier this season.
- Guardians vs Blue Jays: Toronto should capitalize, as the Guardians enter on a six-game skid.
- Yankees vs Red Sox: Classic rivalry, and the Yankees badly need a bounce-back after last week’s stumble.
- Giants vs Tigers: A rematch of Week 1, where Detroit won by 70. Both teams are fighting for survival.
