Five weeks remain in the 2026 APBL regular season, and the conversation has changed.
For most of the year, the league has been trying to figure out who was real. Miami looked real. St. Louis looked real. Chicago became real. Baltimore kept proving it. Texas stayed dangerous without making much noise. Boston hung around. Arizona refused to leave. The Angels kept themselves in the picture even when the road got rough.
Now the question is different.
Who has enough left to finish?
Week 17 brought the APBL back into divisional play, and the results made the playoff race feel sharper than it has all season. Chicago and Miami are now tied at the top of the Power Rankings. Baltimore strengthened its grip on the American League by taking the season-series tiebreaker from New York. Boston delivered one of the biggest scoring performances of the year. Arizona lost a heavyweight matchup but still holds the final National League playoff position. The Angels stumbled, the Yankees slid further, and Cincinnati continued searching for answers.
The first half of the season introduced the contenders. The next five weeks will decide which ones survive the cut.
The Streak Survives Another Test - Cubs 389, Diamondbacks 333
The Game of the Week delivered exactly what the standings promised.
Chicago entered Week 17 riding the longest winning streaks of the season, but Arizona was not interested in becoming another footnote. The Diamondbacks jumped out to an early 31-point lead and forced the Cubs to respond against a team that has already made a habit of making the National League uncomfortable.
Chicago answered the way great teams answer.
The Cubs finished with 389 points, the highest single-week total of the season when excluding the extended Rivalry Week format, and pushed their winning streak to twelve games. Arizona was excellent in defeat, posting 333 points in a week where that score would have beaten every other team except Boston and the opponent standing directly in front of them.
That is the kind of loss that stings because the Diamondbacks did plenty right. They just ran into the wrong team at the wrong time. Chicago is no longer just hot. Chicago is walking around with smoke coming off the bat.
Boston Brings the Hammer - Red Sox 366, Guardians 90
Boston did not leave much room for drama.
The Red Sox overwhelmed Cleveland 366-90, producing one of the largest margins of victory of the season and continuing to hold their place in the American League playoff field. Boston improved to 11-6 and reminded the rest of the league that even when the Power Rankings place them just outside the Top Five, the Red Sox are still capable of putting up a number that changes the tone of a week.
Cleveland, meanwhile, added another difficult mark to a season full of them. The Guardians’ 90-point effort became the third-lowest single-game score of the year, and Cleveland now owns seven of the ten lowest scoring outputs in the APBL this season.
Some weeks are about moving forward. For Cleveland, Week 17 was another reminder of how heavy this season has been.
Baltimore Claims the Tiebreaker - Orioles 302, Yankees 255
Baltimore and New York entered Week 17 with their season series tied at one game apiece.
The Orioles left with control.
New York had moments, especially after taking Wednesday and Thursday from Baltimore, but the Orioles reclaimed the lead on Friday and never let the Yankees back through the door. The final score gave Baltimore a 47-point victory and, more importantly, the head-to-head tiebreaker over New York for the season.
That matters.
Baltimore has now won three straight and remains the No. 1 seed in the American League playoff picture. New York has lost four in a row and continues sliding away from the final playoff spot. The Yankees are not eliminated, but the road is getting steeper every week. Baltimore did not just win a game. The Orioles took one more tool out of New York’s September toolbox.
Miami Keeps Rolling - Marlins 268, Braves 186
Miami opened the week with a small lead and spent the rest of the matchup stretching it.
The Marlins defeated Atlanta 268-186, extending their winning streak to three games and holding their place at the very top of the APBL Power Rankings. The Braves have now lost two straight, damaging the momentum they had built earlier in the summer.
For Miami, this was a professional win. Nothing chaotic. Nothing dramatic. Just another week where the Marlins stacked points, protected position, and reminded the National League that Chicago may be the top seed, but Miami is still very much sitting at the head table.
Philadelphia Spoils Cincinnati’s Reset - Phillies 222, Reds 211
Cincinnati finally snapped its long losing streak last week, but the Reds could not turn that relief into momentum.
The Reds led from Monday through Wednesday before Philadelphia used a 39-point night to flip the matchup by four. Cincinnati had chances to respond, but ill-timed start-sit decisions on Thursday and Friday cost the Reds 29 total points and helped open the door for the Phillies to escape with an 11-point victory.
Philadelphia is back in the win column after three straight losses. Cincinnati, meanwhile, adds another frustrating result to a season that has gone sideways after a strong early start. The Reds have talent. They have history. Right now, they just cannot seem to get the week to finish the way it starts.
White Sox Surprise the Angels - White Sox 172, Angels 149
This was one of the biggest surprises of Week 17.
The Angels led after the first two days and appeared positioned to take care of business against the White Sox. Instead, Chicago grabbed the lead on Wednesday and never gave it back, closing out a 23-point victory.
The win gives the White Sox their first victory in four tries and adds another sign that this season has been a genuine step forward. They are no longer one of the league’s automatic bottom-three teams. They are not in the playoff race yet, but they are no longer a free space on the schedule either.
For Los Angeles, the loss hurts. The Angels remain in the playoff field, but they have now dropped two straight and cannot afford to keep leaving winnable games on the table.
St. Louis Keeps Pace - Cardinals 266, Giants 235
St. Louis is not making as much noise as Chicago or Miami right now, but the Cardinals keep doing important work.
The Cardinals defeated San Francisco 266-235 and have now won three straight since their rough two-game slide. They remain one game behind Chicago in the NL West and continue to sit comfortably inside the National League playoff picture.
San Francisco continues to show face near the bubble, but the Giants are running out of time to turn competitive weeks into meaningful ground. At 8-9, they are still close enough to make things interesting, but close does not cash checks in September. At some point, the Giants need wins, not just respect.
Texas Keeps Winning Quietly - Rangers 185, Athletics 124
Texas is not getting the same spotlight it carried during last year’s championship run.
The Rangers may not care.
With a 185-124 win over Sacramento, Texas improved to 11-6 and has now won three of its last four games. The score was not flashy, but it did not need to be. The Rangers continue stacking wins and remain firmly in control of the No. 2 seed in the American League playoff picture.
Sacramento has now lost three straight and continues to sit near the bottom of the league. Texas, meanwhile, keeps moving through the season like a team that understands something simple: banners are not defended with noise. They are defended with wins.
Power Rankings
For the first time in weeks, the top of the Power Rankings is completely level.
Miami and Chicago are tied at .958, giving the league two teams sharing the top line of the conversation. The Marlins still have one of the strongest full-season résumés in the APBL, while the Cubs have become the hottest team in the league and continue climbing with every win.
St. Louis remains third at .854, holding steady after its third straight victory. Los Angeles and Baltimore are tied at .750 for fourth, with Boston sitting just behind them at .740. San Francisco remains seventh at .573, and the drop after that shows how clearly the upper tier has begun to separate.

Playoff Watch
Magic numbers are now officially beginning to enter the conversation, but with five games still remaining, the APBL is not quite in full clinch-watch mode yet. That changes soon. For now, the playoff picture remains more about position, pressure, and who is running out of time.
In the American League, Baltimore remains the No. 1 seed, followed by Texas, Boston, and Los Angeles. The Orioles helped themselves by securing the head-to-head tiebreaker over New York, while the Yankees’ fourth straight loss left them outside the field with fewer chances to recover.
In the National League, Chicago remains the No. 1 seed, Miami holds second, St. Louis sits third, and Arizona remains fourth. The Diamondbacks lost this week, but their 333-point performance proved they are not fading quietly. They still hold the final spot, and with five games left, that is all that matters.

Week 18 Preview
Week 18 brings cross-division play with only five games remaining in the regular season, and several matchups carry serious playoff weight.
The Game of the Week is Arizona against Miami. The Diamondbacks beat the Marlins by 31 back in Week 7, and both teams are 7-4 since that meeting. Miami still holds the NL East lead and shares the top spot in the Power Rankings, while Arizona remains the fourth seed in the National League playoff race and sits only three games behind Chicago in the NL West. If Arizona wants to keep pressure on the field, this is the kind of game that can change the conversation.
The Angels and Yankees should be another one to watch. Los Angeles is trying to avoid a third straight loss, while New York desperately needs to stop a four-game skid. Their lifetime series has been absurdly tight, with an average margin of victory of just 2.8 points across five meetings. If the Yankees are going to make one last push toward the playoff field, this week feels close to mandatory.
Boston and Texas renew a matchup with American League seeding implications, while Chicago faces Philadelphia looking to extend its winning streak to thirteen games. Baltimore meets Sacramento in a game the Orioles should win on paper, but paper has been wrong before. St. Louis faces Cincinnati, San Francisco meets Atlanta, and the White Sox get Cleveland in a matchup that gives Chicago a chance to continue proving this season is different from every one that came before it.
Five weeks remain.
The contenders are still standing.
The challengers are running out of runway.
And the APBL playoff race has officially stopped whispering.
