For nearly a month, the story at the top of the Alliance Professional Baseball League had belonged to the St. Louis Cardinals. They climbed to the top of the standings, became the first franchise to earn a perfect 1.000 Power Ranking, and spent Week 8 reminding the rest of the league why they had become the standard everyone else was chasing.
Then Miami came calling.
The highly anticipated Week 9 showdown between the No. 1 Cardinals and No. 2 Marlins carried the feel of a postseason matchup long before the first points were scored. It featured the two best teams in the league, the two highest-ranked teams in the Power Rankings, and two franchises with legitimate championship aspirations. By the end of the week, Miami had delivered the statement it was looking for, defeating St. Louis 295-254 and handing the Cardinals just their second loss of the season.
The Marlins jumped in front immediately, opening the week with the lead on Monday and maintaining control despite several St. Louis rallies. The Cardinals trimmed the deficit to only 11 points after Tuesday's games and later cut an 88-point Friday gap down to just 34 points by the end of Saturday. Every time it appeared St. Louis might complete the comeback, however, Miami found another answer. The Marlins closed the door on Sunday and stretched the final margin to 41 points, earning what may prove to be the most important regular-season victory of the year.
The win did not move Miami past St. Louis in the Power Rankings, but it did something equally important. It reminded the rest of the APBL that the race for the top remains very much alive. The Cardinals may still hold the highest ranking, but Miami now owns the league's biggest head-to-head victory of the season.
While Miami and St. Louis occupied most of the spotlight, several other teams continued shaping the playoff picture around them.
For Cincinnati, the search for answers against San Francisco continued. The Giants once again proved to be a difficult matchup for the Reds, controlling the contest from start to finish and securing a 288-193 victory. San Francisco led wire-to-wire after opening with a 33-point advantage on Monday and never allowed Cincinnati to seriously threaten. The result improves the Giants to 5-1 all-time against Cincinnati when playoff games are included, a streak that dates back to San Francisco's championship-game victory in the APBL's inaugural season. Some rivalries are built on balance. This one continues to tilt heavily toward the Giants.
Chicago and Atlanta delivered one of the week's most competitive contests. The Cubs led throughout the matchup, but the Braves stayed within striking distance all week and trailed by only five points entering Sunday. Chicago responded when it mattered most, pulling away late for a 284-261 victory that improved the Cubs to 5-4 and kept them firmly in the National League playoff conversation.
The Baltimore Orioles continued their strong season by defeating the Los Angeles Angels 249-216 in a matchup between two playoff contenders. Baltimore led from beginning to end, though the outcome remained uncertain until late in the week. After holding only a three-point lead following Friday's games, the Orioles exploded for 100 points over the weekend while limiting the Angels to just 50. The victory pushes Baltimore to 6-3 and further strengthens its position among the American League's most dangerous teams.
Boston may not have generated many headlines this week, but the Red Sox quietly continued doing what good teams do: winning. Sacramento briefly grabbed a ten-point lead after Monday's games, but Boston erased the deficit almost immediately and methodically expanded its advantage throughout the remainder of the week. The Red Sox ultimately secured a 199-149 victory, extending their winning streak to three games while improving to 7-2 on the season. Sacramento, meanwhile, has now dropped three consecutive matchups.
The highest-scoring performance of Week 9 belonged to the New York Yankees. The White Sox actually opened with a five-point lead after Monday's action and ultimately posted their highest score of the season with 232 points. Unfortunately for Chicago, the Yankees produced one of the biggest offensive weeks seen anywhere in the league this year. New York's 334 points rank as the fifth-highest single-team total of the 2026 season and powered the Yankees to a convincing 102-point victory.
Texas also continued its steady climb up the standings. The defending champions added another win by defeating Cleveland 214-161, sending the Guardians to 0-9 on the season. Cleveland continues searching for its first victory, while Texas improved to 6-3 and remains firmly in the thick of the American League playoff race.
Arizona rounded out the week's action with a 248-190 victory over Philadelphia. The Phillies held a slim lead through Tuesday, but Wednesday proved decisive. Arizona erupted for 58 points while Philadelphia managed only 11, creating a swing the Phillies could never recover from. The Diamondbacks have now won four of their last five games and continue to emerge as one of the league's more intriguing second-half contenders.
The Power Rankings remain remarkably stable despite Miami's victory over St. Louis. The Cardinals surrendered their perfect rating but retained the top position at .979, while Miami strengthened its hold on second place at .938. Boston climbed to .875 after another successful week, while the Angels and Reds remained fourth and fifth respectively despite both seeing slight movement in their overall ratings. Baltimore and New York sit just outside the Top Five, tied at .677 and continuing to pressure the teams ahead of them.
Week 9 Power Rankings
-
St. Louis Cardinals — .979
-
Miami Marlins — .938
-
Boston Red Sox — .875
-
Los Angeles Angels — .740
-
Cincinnati Reds — .688
Looking ahead to Week 10, several fascinating storylines are waiting.
Boston and San Francisco will renew a series that produced a twelve-point Giants victory the last time the clubs met. Baltimore and Chicago continue a rivalry that has swung back and forth over the past two seasons. Atlanta faces Texas hoping to reverse a trend that saw the Rangers win both meetings in 2025 by an average of 60 points.
The biggest upset opportunity of the season may belong to Cleveland. The Guardians welcome St. Louis looking for their first win of 2026 against a Cardinals franchise that has defeated them five consecutive times by an average margin of nearly 83 points. On paper, it appears to be one of the most lopsided matchups of the season. Baseball, however, has never cared much about paper.
Meanwhile, Miami travels west for a first-ever meeting with the Los Angeles Angels after delivering the biggest victory of Week 9. Whether the Marlins can build upon that momentum remains to be seen, but one thing is certain.
For the first time in weeks, the conversation surrounding the APBL is no longer about a perfect Power Ranking, a record-setting performance, or an untouchable frontrunner.
The Marlins struck back.
And suddenly the race at the top feels a whole lot more interesting.
